And the winner is…
I recently read this interesting article on Smashing Magazine entitled, “In Defense of Photoshop”.
In it, the author, Thomas Giannattasio, claims that a new war is waging amongst web designers over the usefulness of Photoshop, given the degree of command we now have with HTML5 and CSS3 styling.
“Photoshop can be used to create impeccable designs, but after hours of hard work, you end up with a static mock-up that is incapable of emulating the experience one gets when the design is converted to mark-up and viewed in the browser. HTML and CSS mock-ups require no explanation. They present the final product in the final environment.”
Giannattasio outlines many good points in favor of Photoshop, which leads us to what I think is the (hopefully) obvious conclusion. While HTML5 and CSS3 offer us a greater multitude of design control than web developers have been previously used to, nothing can really compare to the sheer graphical power of Photoshop and I think that at this point in HTML’s lifespan it is still almost unfair to place the these two giants on the same scale.

That’s not to say that things couldn’t be changing in the future. As the languages get more and more powerful, and the modern users browser become capable of handling them, we could see things shift in a different direction. Factor in the addition of powerful online graphics editing alternatives like Aviary, and the reign of King Photoshop may very well be over.
